4 key steps when designing a self-service area
Think of the screen, physical layout and staff support as a single experience.

Start with the layout
Place the kiosk somewhere customers can easily see it without obstructing entry and exit routes. Leave enough room to approach the screen, select products, and complete the transaction. Include the accessibility needs of different users in your planning.
Present options step by step
Use clear categories rather than trying to show the entire catalog on the first screen. Make it easy for customers to see where they are, how to go back, and how to edit their cart.
Make the payment result clear
Show the total before payment. After the transaction, clearly communicate whether it succeeded, is pending, or needs to be retried. An order number and pickup location help the customer understand what to do next.
Keep help easy to find
Self-service does not mean every customer can proceed without help. Make it easy to reach a staff member and monitor the area during busy periods. The steps where customers hesitate most show where the design needs to be simplified.
